Delicate construction work has begun at Kaiser Permanente West Los Angeles Medical Center, where McCarthy Building Cos.'s Newport Beach, Calif., office is building a five-level, 200,000-sf patient tower and a 65-ft.-long connecting structure that will join the new tower to two existing structures — all while the campus remains fully operational. Designed by HMC Architects, Ontario, Calif., the $80 million project includes emergency and labor and delivery areas.

Haverford (Pa.) College has kicked off a long-term campus expansion plan with the groundbreaking of a $28 million, 100,000-sf athletic facility, which will house the college's basketball arena. Designed by Bohlin Cywinski Jackson, Wilkes-Barre, Pa., the facility is designed to qualify for LEED certification.

Los Angeles Union Station will be an even more hectic place for the next few years, as work commences on two five story apartment towers on either side of L.A.'s busiest transportation hub. General contractor R.D. Olson Construction, Irvine, Calif., will alter travel routes around Union Station during construction of the towers, which were designed by GMP Architects, Santa Monica.

A sweeping, curved, zinc-clad wall is the focal point of a new $18 million science building at The Peddie School, a Hightstown, N.J.-based college-prep school. Designed by Hillier Architecture, Philadelphia, the three-story, 41,000-sf facility will house laboratories, classrooms, and offices for the school's chemistry, biology, and physics departments. General contractor Skanska USA Building Inc., Parsippany, N.J., broke ground on the project last month. Completion is scheduled for fall 2005.
