CSI releases drafts of new MasterFormat

Taking the next step in revising its MasterFormat document, which currently organizes construction specifications into 16 divisions, the Construction Specifications Institute, Alexandria, Va., has submitted two draft proposals for industry comment.

The first proposal keeps divisions 3 to 14 intact, eliminates divisions 15 (mechanical) and 16 (electrical), and redistributes and expands their content into three new divisions: communications, life safety, and integrated automation and control. Five divisions would be left blank to accommodate future additions to the document.

The second proposal completely reworks MasterFormat, creating nine new discipline groupings: procurement and contract requirements; common requirements; common construction; infrastructure and exterior construction; building construction; mechanical; electrical and communications; processes; and equipment and furnishings.
