The Columbus (Ohio) Public School District has named URS Corp., San Francisco, executive architect for a $1.3 billion program to rebuild and renovate over 120 educational facilities in Columbus. URS is one of three firms to provide design services for more than 50 new buildings and 70 renovations.

The Wentz Group, San Carlos, Calif., recently broke ground on an $8.5 million office and retail building located at 175 S. Lake Ave. in Pasadena, Calif. The four-story, 70,696-sq.-ft., structural-steel complex will have 52,000 sq. ft. of offices and retail space accommodating up to nine stores.

The Atlanta office of Turner Construction Co., New York, has been awarded a contract to build a $55 million courthouse facility for the city of Atlanta in its downtown business district. The six-story, 200,000-sq.-ft. facility is scheduled for completion in August 2003. The project is being developed by Atlanta Capital Courts Facilities. It will offer increased security features, larger public waiting areas, expanded space for record storage, and improved accommodations for the disabled.

The Weston, Mass., Rivers School is currently in its first phase of construction for a new 77,000-sq.-ft. student Athletic Center, designed by Jeffrey Millman Associates with ADD Inc., Cambridge, Mass. The two-story complex will include an ice arena/field house, a gymnasium, a training and office complex, an equipment cage, locker/shower facilities and reception and school function areas. The building will be composed of structural-steel construction with a masonry and stucco exterior façade. Boston-based contractor Suffolk Construction is providing the construction management services for the $14.4 million project. Completion is scheduled for the fall of 2003.
