Museum will reflect Tacoma's revitalized waterfront

Currently under construction in Tacoma, Wash., the $63 million Museum of Glass is the centerpiece of the city's $150 million development on the Thea Foss Waterway overlooking Puget Sound. Canadian architect Arthur Erickson designed the 75,000-sq.-ft. museum, which is scheduled to open in July 2002. Its most notable architectural feature is a tilted, 90-ft.-high stainless-steel cone. Other projects planned or under way in the waterfront area include: the 50,000-sq.-ft. Tacoma Art Museum, designed by Albuquerque, N.M.-based Antoine Predock Architects; the 220,000-sq.-ft. Tacoma Convention Center, designed jointly by Bellevue, Wash.-based MulvannyG2 Architecture and Sumner, Wash.-based Merritt+Pardini Architects; and the second phase of the University of Washington Tacoma campus, which includes the renovation of five historic buildings.
