25,000 LEED Professionals and Counting
Building owners and developers who wish to apply sustainable design and construction practices for their next project will have no shortage of green experts to call.
Some 25,000 AEC professionals are now accredited through the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED Accredited Professional program, up from 20,100 this time last year, according to USGBC.
Each year, Building Design & Construction tracks the number of LAPs within the nation’s largest design and construction firms as part of its annual Giants survey. Of the 429 firms surveyed this year, 80% report having at least one LAP on staff, and 33% say they have 10 or more LAPs.
Chicago-based Perkins+Will retains the top spot on BD&C’s top 100 Building Team LAPs ranking, with 450 LAPs on staff. Thirty-one P+W designers earned their green stripes within the past year.
Edmonton-based Stantec experienced the largest gain in LAPs within the past year following its October 2005 acquisition of Vancouver-based green design specialist Keen Engineering. The moved added more than 100 LEED Accredited Professionals to its staff, helping Stantec crack the top five on our list.
Other big gainers: The Turner Corp., Dallas (115 LAPs, up from 76 in last year’s ranking), Shepley Bulfinch Richardson and Abbott, Boston (58 LAPs, up from 36), Kling, Philadelphia (51 LAPs, up from 30), and Henderson Engineers, Lenexa, Kan. (46 LAPs, up from 5).
