    Chicago Architecture Foundation’s River Cruise aboard Chicago’s First Lady is cruising. New this year: an evening cruise at 5:30 pm every Thursday, starting in June.

     

    Chicago Model City. New Exhibition Opens June 11

    This new, large exhibition fills the atrium of the Santa Fe Building with a highly detailed model of Chicago.

     

    FREE CAFamily Programming- Studio Sundays for the whole family. May 17

    Plus June 22-June 27, a Family Fun Festival Tent at Millennium Park 10-3

     

    B Like Burnham exhibition opens June 11

    An exploration of Who was Daniel Burnham?  Why is he important to Chicago?

     

    Happy Hour Tours May-September

    Chicago Model City

    The centerpiece for the citywide Burnham celebration, Chicago Model City will consist of scale models, photographs, maps, videos, and computer animations. Visitors will be able to get up close to Chicago Model City. The scale of the highly detailed models is 1 inch to 50 feet, making the Sears Tower nearly three feet tall!

     

    B Like Burnham

    Opening in June 2009, the exhibition B Like Burnham will help CAF visitors; especially families with children understand the man, the Plan, and the legacy of Daniel H. Burnham.

     

    Chicago: You Are Here–An engaging permanent exhibition at the Chicago Architecture Foundation provides images, models, artifacts and video presentations, encouraging visitors to explore the architecture, infrastructure and environment of Chicago.

    BUS TOURS:

     

    Highlights by Bus

    Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at 9:30 am

    This three and a half hour bus tour highlights Chicago’s wide range of architectural influence and design, and covers 30 miles of the city including: the Loop, Hyde Park, the Gold Coast, several historic districts, university campus’, parks, and residential neighborhoods. Every tour features the Mies van der Rohe’s IIT campus and the Rookery in downtown Chicago. Some tours visit the interior of H.H. Richardson’s Glessner House and some visit Robie House.

    Devil in the White City Bus Tour

    June 11, 14, 25, 28; July 7, 9, 19, 23 at 10 am.

    This compelling bus tour and slide presentation is based upon Erik Larson’s bestselling novel that chronicles the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition and the emergence of America’s first mass murderer.

     

    Chicago Architecture Foundation River Cruise

    Start cruising like you did last summer. CAF’s world-famous Official Architecture River Cruises aboard Chicago’s First Lady depart every day throughout the day. New this year: an evening cruise has been added, starting in June, every Thursday at 5:30, perfect for date night or an after-work meet-up. See www.architecture.org for full schedule.

    Happy Hour Tours Return May through September

    People working in the Loop and visitors alike always enjoy the Happy Hour walking tours given every weekday at 5:30 pm.  There’s a different tour each day, each ending with a complimentary drink at a local restaurant. See www.architecture.org for full schedule.

     

    Daniel Burnham: Architect, Planner, Leader

    June 5, 14, 21, 26; July 5, 10, 19, 24 at 1:30 pm: 

    Created for the centennial celebration of the 1909 Plan of Chicago, this walking tour explores Burnham’s career using examples of his work in the Loop. Learn about Burnham’s impact on the architecture and planning professions as well as his unique ability to work with creative talent and community leaders to accomplish great feats.

     

    Palmer House

    May 2, June 6 at 10:30am: This 45-minute walking tour goes behind the scenes of this remarkable Chicago landmark. One of the oldest continuously-operated hotels in the world, the restoration of this historic treasure is an inspiring tale of perseverance, talent, and vision.

     

    Sculpture of Lincoln Park

    June 12, July 12 at 10 am.  From the famous statue of Abraham Lincoln by Augustus Saint-Gaudens to the towering Ulysses S. Grant monument that overlooks Lake Shore Drive.

     

    Evanston Downtown

    June 10, 13; July 8, 11 at 10 am. Evanston has main-street charm but is becoming a skyscraper city, a battleground between developers and preservationists.

     

    Preserving Chicago Landmarks

    June 13, July 11 at 12:30 pm. Tour explores why choices to preserve are made and how those decisions shape the future of Chicago.
