Clark Construction and HKS complete Greenspun Hall for UNLV’s College of Urban Affairs

Las Vegas, Nev. - February 25, 2009 - Clark Construction Group, LLC, has completed Greenspun Hall, the new home of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) College of Urban Affairs. For the first time, six of the College’s seven departments will be under one roof, in an environment designed to foster collaboration and innovation. Greenspun Hall, registered with the U.S. Green Building Council with the certification goal of LEED® Gold, was formally dedicated in December.
The $93.7 million, 120,000 square-foot building’s exterior is comprised of sandstone, brick, metal panels, curtain wall, punched windows, and exposed architectural concrete. The building’s plaza includes a galvanized photovoltaic (PV) panel array, brick pavers, and desert landscaping. Located at a natural gateway to the UNLV campus, the site is punctuated by a 125-foot brick tower bearing the university’s name, welcoming visitors turning west off Maryland Avenue. The Greenspun Family Foundation contributed $37 million toward the design and construction of this project – the largest single donation in UNLV history.
To create a space that will meet the evolving needs of the College’s departments, UNLV hired a planning consultant to interview potential users of the building to determine what kind of spaces and facilities they would need in the next five years. In addition to classrooms and offices, Greenspun Hall includes a specialized lab for the Department of Criminal Justice and the Center for the Analysis of Crime Statistics, an environmental systems and geographic information system lab, five high-tech classrooms equipped with fully-automated control systems, six conference rooms, and a 190-seat auditorium.
Greenspun Hall’s high definition media and production facility, scheduled for completion in fall 2009, will be the new home to UNLV-TV and KUNV radio. The finished facilities will include a 2,184 square-foot television studio, three radio studios, 1,200 square-foot performance studio, advanced editing bays, and a technical operations center.
Greenspun Hall is registered with the U.S. Green Building Council with the certification goal of LEED® Gold. In addition to the PV array, which offsets 15 percent of regulated energy consumption, the building’s energy conserving elements include a chilled beam heating and cooling system and a louvered canopy. Clark managed many of the LEED construction credits, including diverting more than 75 percent of construction waste from landfills and using low-emitting and regionally-produced materials.
HKS, of Dallas, in association with Robert A.M. Stern Architects, of New York, designed Greenspun Hall. Additional project partners and key subcontractors included KHS&S Contractors, Tampa, Fla., drywall and metal stud framing; Helix Electric, Las Vegas, electrical systems; Bombard Electric, Las Vegas, photovoltaic panel contractor; Southwest Steel Las Vegas, structural steel manufacturer; Desert Plumbing, Las Vegas, plumbing contractor; Isaac Construction Company, Las Vegas, concrete contractor; Century Steel, Las Vegas, rebar; U.S. Mechanical Contractors, Las Vegas, mechanical contractor; Giroux Glass, Las Vegas, glass and pheonolic panel contractor; and Frazier Masonry Corporation, Las Vegas, masonry contractor.
