General Mills to build new 1.5m distribution facility
Rockefeller Group Development Corporation (RGDC) has been selected by General Mills to construct a 1.5 million square foot distribution center in Social Circle, Georgia, located 50 miles east of Atlanta. According to real estate research and portfolio strategy firm PPR, the facility is the largest build-to-suit distribution center to be built in 2009.

Construction spending rises, says U.S. Commerce Department
Spending on construction in the U.S. unexpectedly rose in April as the housing slump eased and more commercial projects got under way. The 0.8 percent gain was the biggest since August and followed a revised 0.4 percent increase the prior month, the Commerce Department said this week in Washington. Residential construction climbed 0.6 percent and work on power plants and factories propelled commercial construction up.

Siemens to build wind turbine plant in Shanghai
Siemens AG on Friday began construction of a new wind turbine manufacturing plant in Shanghai, the largest city in China, so as to further enhance its environmental portfolio by taking advantage of the Chinese government's favorable policies for renewable energy development. The plant is located in Shanghai's Lingang New City, covering a land area of 180,000 square meters. The production facility will be operational with a wind power capacity of 500MW in the second half year of 2009. In the early stage, Siemens will produce blades for 2.3 megawatt and 3.6MW wind turbines in its production site in Lingang mainly for the Chinese market and for export.

Citi builds first LEED Platinum data center
Citi announced that its newly completed Citi Data Center in Frankfurt is the first of its kind in the world  to have  earned the coveted Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum  rating from the US Green Building Council (USGBC). This is the highest achievable award for new construction (V2.2 category).

Bangladesh to build nuclear power plant
Bangladesh and Russia have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) here (Wednesday) as an umbrella accord aimed at enhancing cooperation between the two countries in peaceful use of nuclear energy, by way of installing a nuclear plant. The immediate purpose of the deal signed between the state-owned Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC) and the Russian State Atomic Energy Corporation-Rosatom - is to take the necessary steps to build a 600-1000-megawatt power plant in Bangladesh.

NYC mayor calls for ground zero summit
The mayor and a top state lawmaker on Friday called for a meeting to resolve a power struggle at ground zero, with growing momentum to build fewer skyscrapers than planned in an uncertain economy. Mayor Michael Bloomberg invited the governors of New York and New Jersey, Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, the agency that owns ground zero and trade center developer Larry Silverstein to a meeting at his mansion next week. The developer and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey are in stalled, bitter talks to renegotiate Silverstein's lease at the site for the second time since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Ruby Tuesday launches Web site to track green initiatives
Ruby Tuesday restaurants are celebrating Earth Day this year with several new green initiatives. The international chain has more than 900 company-owned and franchised restaurants and almost 50,000 employees, and nearly all are taking part in one way or another. Earth Day is celebrated around the world on April 22, 2009. Ruby Tuesday first made a commitment to minimize the negative impact on the planet and improve the company's green standards several years ago. "It started with small changes, with regard to our supplies and paper products," says Richard Johnson, who directed Ruby Tuesday's initial green program. He says the company is now taking it to the next level with the launch of a website solely dedicated to this initiative, www.AGreenRuby.com , so they can track all changes and share updates with their guests.

Gehry: Atlantic Yards project won't happen
Mar. 25, 2009 (Gothamist delivered by Newstex) -- Starchitect Frank Gehry really stepped in it during a recent interview with industry journal The Architect's Newspaper, admitting he doesn't think developer Bruce Ratner's $4.2 billion plan to build a Nets basketball arena, office towers and thousands of apartments in Brooklyn will become a reality. In an interview on the occasion of his 80th birthday, Gehry dropped the bombshell when asked about unrealized commissions he most wishes had been built: "The Corcoran Gallery in DC, the Atlantic Yards project in Brooklyn”I dont think its going to happen."

Canadian green building tangled in red tape
OTTAWA _ A pair of federal programs aimed at making buildings more environmentally friendly were so tangled in red tape that companies complained applying to them wasn't worth the hassle, documents show.

The new rack enclosures are designed to help customers enhance hardware utilization, create effective power and cooling, and reduce the server footprint in their data center, Dell said. Albert Esser, vice president of data center infrastructure at Dell, said: "Data center racks are no longer just cabinets that house servers and storage they are an integral part of building a powerful and flexible data center infrastructure to maximize IT productivity. With the launch of our new rack enclosures, businesses of all sizes can best manage their data centers in a cost-effective and energy-efficient way."
