Alhambra, CA – Extensive building and infrastructure upgrades have begun at one of five high schools in the Alhambra Unified School District.
Construction recently started on a $37-million project at Mark Keppel High School that, when finished in about two years, will see new and enlarged buildings, the thorough modernization of existing buildings, and major enhancements to the campus' common areas and landscaping. Approximately 2,000 students attend Keppel High in Alhambra, a western San Gabriel Valley city of 85,804, about 8 miles east of downtown Los Angeles.
The project's stakeholders include the Pasadena, CA, office of architecture firm gkkworks and the Newport Beach, CA, office of general contractor McCarthy Building Cos.
New structures to be built include a two-story, 20,358-square-foot building for science classrooms and a three-story, 26,229-square-foot building for music classrooms and rehearsal rooms. Additionally, the existing 27,000-square-foot gymnasium and locker room area will be expanded by nearly 20,000 square feet. The existing gym will be turned into a practice gym, and the newly built area will become the larger varsity gym.
A few buildings – a 12,000-square-foot classroom and auditorium structure, 42,000-square-foot science wing and 2,200-square-foot library – will undergo an extensive modernization process. Additionally, the girls' locker room in the existing gym area will be renovated. An open-air, covered bridge will connect the new two-story science classroom building to the existing main building.
Major site-work improvements include a new 44-space parking lot, steel-framed structures for shade and the installation of new electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and digital and telecommunications systems.
